If your trip to Rome is approaching, you’ve probably been wondering how you can get to the city center from the main airports.
For this reason DailyRome has decided to write their first article as an effective made to measure guide for all the people like you who do not wish to hang around at the airport but want to go out to discover the city immediately!
During many of my travels I have spent so much time inside airports trying to figure out what was the fastest, the cheapest or the most convenient way to reach the city center!
On this guide you will find all the necessary information to know perfectly all the services at Fiumicino Airport and Ciampino Airport.
Let’s get right to the point, for convenience I will split this article into two main parts:
Fiumicino Airport is about 30km from the center of Rome, it is the largest airport in Italy and for this reason it is very important to know all the services available to reach the city center.
There are 4 Terminals dedicated to the flights: T1, T2, T3 and T5. On your arrival, once you collected your luggage, you will not have to worry about your terminal as you will just need to follow the signs to find all the services you need.
To reach the center of Rome you can choose between 4 different services:
- Car rental
Bus is certainly the cheapest way to reach the center of Rome.
Despite being the slowest vehicle you can reach the central train station Rome-Termini in about 1 hour and for this reason I find it a good solution!
As you will notice, on your arrival you will find many kinds of Bus, but do not worry, we are here to help you choose the right one for you!
Why: Cotral Bus service is the one that connects Fiumicino Airport with the main Rome’s subway stations (Roma Tiburtina, Rome Termini, Rome Eur Magliana). I recommend to choose this service if your hotel is located near one of the stations other than Rome Termini.
Price: The price of the ticket varies depending on the destination station, for instance, if you wish to get to Rome Termini station your ticket will cost € 5.00 and you can buy it directly on the bus.
Where: The Cotral bus stop is located in front of Terminal T2 (arrivals area), just follow the signs to “Regional Bus Station” that will take you right there!
Sit Bus Shuttle
Why: Sit Bus Shuttle is an excellent bus service. It has WiFi on board to connect you immediately with your friends and family and only two stops in the center of Rome; one on Via Crescenzio near the Vatican and another one at the Rome Termini Station. I’ll recommend it for its speed and the ability to connect immediately over wifi but remember, the bus stops in the center of Rome are only two: Via Crescenzio and Rome Termini (Via Marsala). To reach the center of Rome takes approximately 55 minutes, with departures every 30 minutes.
Price: The ticket price is € 6.00 one way, but you can buy as well the round-trip ticket with a total cost of € 11.00
If you wish to save time you can buy the ticket also online or directly on the bus.
Where: The Sit Bus Shuttle stop is located in the “Bus Station” at Terminal T3 POLO BUS arrivals, platform no. 3
Why: T.A.M Bus connects Fiumicino Airport to two of the main stations of Rome, Rome Termini (Via Giolitti) and Rome Ostiense. Bus leave every 30 minutes from the Airport and take about 55 minutes to reach the city center. I recommend it if your hotel is close to Roma Ostiense.
Price: The ticket price is € 5.00 for a one way trip but if you purchase on the spot the round-trip ticket you get a discount and pay a total of € 8.00
Tickets can be purchased online on their website or directly on the bus.
Where: The T.A.M Bus stop is located in the “Bus Station” at Terminal T3 POLO BUS arrivals, platform no. 4
Why: Terravision does not need any introduction, I’m sure you already know this service, available all over Europe and here in Rome is a guarantee as well. If you wish to get to Roma Termini railway station this is the perfect bus, Terravision makes only one stop, leaves every 30 minutes from the airport and gets to destination in about 55 min.
Price: This is the cheapest bus, if you by your ticket online you will spend €4.00 each way. If you purchase the ticket directly on the bus you will spend €6.00 each way.
Where: The Terravision bus stop is located at the “Bus Station” at Terminal T3 POLO BUS arrivals, platform stall (yes, the same as the Sit Bus Shuttle!!!).
Rome AirportBus Schiaffini
Why: Rome Airport Bus Schiaffini has wifi on board and leaves the Airport approximately every 45 min. As well as the Terravision, it makes only one stop to Roma Termini Station.
Price: The ticket for this bus will cost € 5.90 one way or € 7.90 for the round trip. You can buy your ticket online or directly on the bus.
Where: The Rome AirportBus stop is located in the “Bus Station” at Terminal T3 POLO BUS arrivals , platform no. 4
The train is definitely the fastest way to reach the center of Rome; in just 32 minutes you can reach the Rome Termini station. If you are going to spend only a few days in Rome this is the means of transportation that I advise, as optimizing transfer time when you have a few days to visit the city is the best way to make the most of all the available time.
Inside Fiumicino Airport there is a real railway station near the arrival and departure terminals; you will find some very convenient directions that will guide you to the entrance of the train station.
However, there are two types of train, let’s choose together the one that suits you:
Leonardo Express is the one-stop train service that connects directly Fiumicino Airport with Rome Termini Station in just 32 minutes.
The train leaves every 30 minutes, and every 15 minutes during the hours with the largest passenger flow.
Price: The ticket price is €14.00 one way but if you are a group of 10 people, you can buy a special book of 10 trips for the price of €115,00 saving €25,00. Tickets can be purchased online or at the station.
Timetable: The connections from Fiumicino Airport are operating from 6.23AM until 11.23PM and from Rome Termini from 05.35AM to 10.35PM
Regional Train FL1
The Regional Train FL1 is a local train that stops at the stations of Rome Tiburtina, Rome Trastevere, Rome Ostiense, Rome Tuscolana.
If you do not need to get to Termini Station this is a good option in between the bus and the fast train thanks to a very affordable price and a guarantee of 47 min to get to Rome Tiburtina.
Price: A I mentioned, the price is only €8.00 each way, the ticket is valid for 90 minutes after validation. The ticket can be purchased online or at the station.
Timetable: The Regional Train FL1 leaves every 30 minutes on holidays and every 15 minutes on weekdays.
Useful Tips: Tickets for both trains can be purchased online at this website http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
The easiest and most comfortable way to reach your hotel is of course the taxi.
Although it is very easy to take it, here are some tips to keep in mind before you get on board.
The Taxi rank is located just in front of the Terminals 1,2,3. The average cost to reach the various subway stations is set by the Rome City Council and you can read it for yourself on the stickers that you will find on the taxi car doors.
Of course these prices will vary depending on your destination address but here is a table of indicative costs:
- Fiumicino Airport-Rome Ostiense Station € 45,00
- Fiumicino Airport-Aurelian Walls € 48,00
- Fiumicino Airport-Rome Tiburtina Station € 55,00
- Fiumicino Airport-Civitavecchia Port € 120,00
- Fiumicino Airport-Magliana Castle € 30,00
- Fiumicino Airport-New Rome Trade Fair District € 25,00
- Fiumicino Airport-Ciampino Airport € 50,00
Useful Tips: The official Taxi of the City of Rome are white and you can recognize them by the sign “TAXI” positioned on the car top. If you do not see these main features it is likely that the taxi is not official so I advice you not to get on board and take the right one.
If your trip to Rome is just the beginning of a great adventure in Italy, inside Fiumicino Airport you will find many car rental companies.
To reach all the car rental offices you will just need to follow the signs that will lead you close to the car park where to pick up cars too.
To make easier the search for the best car rental offer, I have prepared a little list with the websites of all the car rental companies:
The real name of Ciampino Airport is Giovan Battista Pastine. This airport is mainly used by Low Cost companies but despite its small size, the number of passengers who use it is very high.

As I mentioned earlier, it is not possible to take the train inside Ciampino Airport, but by following my tips you can reach the nearest train station in just 5 minutes.
From Ciampino Railway Station you will get trains to get to various places in Rome, to subway stations and to other places outside of Rome.
How to find Ciampino Railway Station: To get to there you will just need to catch an Atral bus (see paragraph above) and just in 5 minutes you will be inside the railway station. The ticket price is €1.20, and you can buy it directly on board.
The Taxi rank is located just outside the Airport and, as for Fiumicino Airport, I recommend that you always check to board an official taxi (white car with the “Taxi” roof sign).
The approximate prices to reach the center of Rome are as follows, but of course they will slightly vary depending on your destination address:
- Ciampino Airport-Aurelian Walls € 30,00
- Ciampino Airport-Rome Ostiense Station € 30,00
- Ciampino Airport-Rome Tiburtina Station € 35,00

Like in any other airport, at Ciampino you can rent a car to have it for your wonderful journey. To make your choice easier, I made you a list of all the rental companies where you can find the best rates and offers:
Well, at this stage I can finally tell that you are ready to take on your arrival at the Roman airports. If you have decided to move by bus, my suggestion is to get always to the nearest metro station and start as soon as possible your adventure through the beautiful streets of Rome.
